With the pandemic begun, we started to explore and admire the things in our backyard. I was amazed by the unspoiled nature in Tasmania. Located off the south-eastern coast of Tasmania Bruny island is a separate island from the Tasmanian mainland. It has been blessed with an abundance of unique wildlife such as the White Wallabies. And home to set of unique local food adventures.

If you are visiting Bruny island I highly recommend to book overnight stay, to get the best experience. There are holiday parks (if you looking for budget accommodation) or luxury accommodation in the island.

There is no public transport or taxi service on the island. Book an open return ferry ticket in advance for your vehicle, which is valid for 30 days. Better to arrive early at the ferry terminal as the queue can be longer in peak seasons. So don’t wait till the last ferry to leave Bruny island at night if you are doing a day trip.

Once you enter Bruny island, there are unique places to visit.

  1. Get Shucked : A locally owned and operated oyster farm and bar. You will get fresh and juicy oysters with different flavours. This is a good lunch option in your day visit to Bruny island. Prices are bit to the expensive side , but I think for a fresh authentic oyster experience it is worth the value.
  2. Cheese and beer company is a Warm shop offering locally produced cheeses, beers & bread, with tastings & picnic tables. You can book a tasting tour which includes an informative cheese and bread tasting tour. This is another good breakfast or lunch option for your trip.
  3. The neck is a good spot for star gazing or watching Aurora in a clear sky at night. Wonderful views at the top. Spectacular views of the beach. Short boardwalk through the penguin colony. You may get a chance to see fairy penguins in this area after dark (around 10pm), but there are no guided tours at the moment.
  4. If you want to spot white wallabies Adventure bay is the place to go. They are very easy to spot near Adventure bay area. I highly recommend to stay overnight in Bruny island if you want to spot white wallabies or fairy penguins. There is a well maintained camping site if you need to spend a night in Bruny island. Bruny island is the only place to spot white wallabies in the world. They are wallabies with a rare genetic mutation and often seen during evening time.
  5. Cape Bruny Light House : If you want a tour inside cape Bruny light house book ahead online to be sure there is a place for you. You are only allowed to enter without a guide and the number of people are limited. The location and view from the top is spectacular. It is around 18km gravel road to the light house, but it is all worth it once you get there. The road is suitable for small cars as well.
  6. Tasman cruises : A 3 hour Cruise alongside some of Australia’s highest sea cliffs, deep sea caves, coastal wildlife such as seals, dolphins, migrating whales and sea birds. This is one of the best highlight of our trip to Bruny island. It can get very cold , wear warm clothes, you will be provided with fully covered rain coats. The tour is suitable for all ages.
  7. Bruny Island Chocolate Co. : A small and boutique chocolatier and whiskey distillery on the drive to Adventure Bay. Beautifully handcrafted chocolates, fudges and truffles, witty and well thought out gifts and amazing Hound’s Tooth Whiskey.

Bruny island has something that everyone would love to see. It is foodies paradise and open to everyone looking for authentic experience in Tasmania.
